George Orwell And The “If Only” Delusion

George Orwell observed that: “Nearly all creators of utopia have resembled the man who has a toothache, and therefore thinks happiness consists in not having a toothache.” Many gurus subsist on the “If Only” Delusion. People come to believe that “if only” they had this or that thing, or if only they could lose fifty pounds, or if only they could win the lottery they could be happy. But we know that once the blocks to self-actualization are removed, we are at a starting point. Real happiness consists, according Tony Robbins, not in getting what you want but rather in becoming all that you can be. And the message of The MetaValues Breakthrough is that we all have a magnificent gift to give that no one else can give. Most of us never learn to unwrap this gift. Self-Actualizing is about Forgetting Self

Maslow has been unjustly blamed by some for fostering a “me generation” of ego-centered narcissism. These cults seem to form around gurus, or ultra-energetic motivators who leap upon a stage and assure their adoring flock that they, too, can be “great.” It is professed that if one can only become fearless enough, free enough, brilliant enough, and can visualize success vividly enough, one can find happiness. The failure of the “ME” philosophy has now become as obvious as the insolvency of the Freudian “ethic.” Yet, in the face of our disillusioning role models, unhappy celebrities, and the continuous unraveling of the lives of rich and famous personalities, many aggressive would-be “achievers” persevere in worshiping the gods of power, narcissism, and fame — and to “keep score” with money and material possessions.
Maslow taught something quite different. The process of Self-Actualization often fosters the peak experience, or “flow.” At these moments of highest actualization there is a self-transcendence, a self-forgetfulness. One becomes completely involved with service to humankind.

Why do People in the Wilderness Die?

A billionaire, a playboy and a technician were lost in the wilderness. The billionaire, in the movie “The Edge,” was depicted by Anthony Hopkins. He told his fearful companions: “People die in the wilderness from shame. They are ashamed to be lost, afraid and confused. They wonder: how did I get here? Why can’t I find my way? So they fail to do the one thing that can save them. They fail to think.” The movie was perhaps an allegory that Abraham Maslow would have appreciated. When he began his studies, Maslow accepted the conventional wisdom that it is natural for most people in our culture to feel unwarranted guilt, crippling shame, and stressful anxiety. As he studied Self-Actualizers, though, he detected that they were relatively free of this baggage. Over time, they developed an attitude of impregnable self-respect. This self-respect was not overbearing or narcissistic, but rather balanced by an equal degree of respect for other people. How does such extraordinary self-respect evolve? Your Prison Door is Open

The late Peter Drucker once observed that when the history of this age is written, it will not be wonder-struck by the technology explosion, nor the web, not any on the technical advances so much. What will intrigue the historians of the future will be the fact that for the first time ever in recorded history, large groups of human beings were actually free, and they did not know what to do with their freedom. The prison door is open. But the masses of humanity are afraid to step out the door. The killer Paradigm shifts

Several dramatic paradigm shifts were originally proposed by the later work of Abraham Maslow, but have been ignored or discarded by too many modern gurus.
[1]. The first paradigm shift for modern thinkers and leaders is Maslow’s contention that the MetaValues of Integrity, Excellence, and Caring (Truth, Beauty and Goodness) are not relative artifacts, but rather are transcendent realities.
[2]. MetaValues are not learned, they are discovered. MetaValues are latent forces that exist in every normal human being and become activated as individuals reach the preliminary stages of Self-Actualization. Once activated, MetaValues configure the personalities of Self-Actualizers along specific lines. Although driven by the same MetaValue forces, Self Actualizers are immensely diverse in their expression of these intrinsic energies.
[3]. The ideal leadership model can be crafted not by studying individuals who happen to be in leadership roles, but rather by studying Dr. Maslow’s findings about healthy, Self-Actualizing human beings. In these findings he delineated specific MetaValue qualities that appear in virtually all Self-Actualizing individuals. Self-Actualizers are always leaders, but do not always occupy classic roles nor possess impressive titles.

The Will to Fail and going the distance

The Will-to-Fail Syndrome functions to cause us to avoid beginning projects —and if we do start, it causes us to avoid completing projects. It is never a question of winning or losing, so much as going the distance. The old seventies movie Rocky is the story of a washed up boxer who is given a chance to fight for the heavyweight title. The bout was conceived of as a publicity stunt, almost a joke, but Rocky takes it seriously. He goes into intense training. Rocky reaches a peak of conditioning; but on the night before the fight the Will-to-Fail complex strikes. Rocky wanders the streets and comes to the conclusion that he simply cannot win. But there is no escape, he must go on with the bout. Finally, Rocky comes to a resolution that calms the struggle going on inside of him. He returns to his room, and informs his girlfriend that the task of beating the champion is too formidable, he cannot do it. “What are you going to do?” she asked.
Rocky replies that he will “Go the distance.” He explains: “No one has ever gone the distance with the champ before. I can’t win, but I am going the distance.” That night, Rocky is battered, but he goes the distance. In fact, he nearly wins the contest. Whether you approve of boxing or not, this is an excellent allegory that expresses the central dilemma of life itself: few people go the distance. At some point in life, usually in their twenties or thirties, the Will-to-Fail Syndrome takes hold; people unconsciously commence the avoidance process. They delay, then give up their dreams; the fire of desire sputters out. You have seen most of your friends, or will see them, one by one drop away from the bitter struggle of life and begin to go through the motions. Only rarely does a human continue to get up after being knocked down — over and over again — by life. Most of us — eventually — decide to stay down to avoid the pain of falling again. We begin to fake it.But when a final and irrevocable decision is made to get up again, no matter what — to go the distance regardless of how many times we are knocked down — something happens. Things begin to change. Forces come to our aid. We are on the side of life.

The Third Part of the Secret

The third part of the secret is that Self-Actualizers habitually make growth decisions rather than safety decisions. Most people live mundane lives that are virtually devoid of courageous decisions; we want structure and predictability. Many individuals with high IQs waste their lives arranging, classifying, and polishing the known rather than enjoying the adventure of discovering the unknown. Yet actualization is all about new and unfolding possibilities. Potential Actualizers are better able to take advantage of these opportunities because they make growth decisions and act on those decisions. Actualizers acquire an independent spirit and a habit of being active, deciding agents rather than tentative, helpless whiners.

No special training is necessary to utilize this secret. You have, right now, access to exactly the same core of power, energy, and inspiration that sustains the top one percent of achievers. The second part of the “secret” is a precious attitude that Maslow uncovered in Self-Actualizers: they assume a nonnegotiable responsibility for the inner life experience. Again, most of us don’t have this attitude. For instance, how often do you say things like, “He makes me angry”? How often do you hold resentments about past injustices? How often do you rehash them? What Maslow saw in Self-Actualizers is that they refused to see themselves as victims, regardless of their circumstances. They perceived their lives as their own and understood that, while they did not have absolute control of their fates, they had absolute control over how they felt about their fates. They understood that we cannot control what others may do or say—but we have total control over our attitudes and responses.

The One Thing No Earthly Power Can Deny You

The first requisite of  setting the self-actualizing process into motion is Respect. Respect for self, balanced by an equal respect for others.
